Remove WordPress 4.2 Emoji Javascript and CSS in head

WordPress 4.2 adds some potentially unwelcome extra code to your site - here is how to remove it!

I’ve just noticed a new addition to the section after updating to WordPress 4.2(x) – a bunch of javascript and CSS – for a second I thought the site had been hacked, but on further investigation it’s actually a core feature.

I understand why this decision got made – however, apart from personal blogs I’m guessing there’s not a great deal of sites that use smileys. You will be pleased that it’s easy to remove with just 2 lines of code though!

If you want to remove this, just add the following code to your theme functions.php file:
